What Is Tofacitinib Used For?

How Does This Medication Work?

Tofacitinib works by blocking enzymes in the body known as janus-associated kinases (JAKs). JAK enzymes help regulate immune cell function. Tofacitinib inhibits JAK enzymes; however, it is not entirely clear how this action helps to improve rheumatoid arthritis symptoms.

Can Children Use It?

Tofacitinib has not been adequately studied in children and is not approved for use in this age group. Talk to your child's healthcare provider about the risks and benefits of using this medication in children.

Is It Safe for Older Adults to Use Tofacitinib?

In clinical studies, older adults given tofacitinib had a high risk for infections, compared with younger age groups. This medication can be used in older adults, although a careful assessment of the risks versus benefits is particularly important.

What About Off-Label Tofacitinib Uses?

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend this medicine for treating something other than the condition discussed in this article. This is called an "off-label" use. Tofacitinib has been studied for a variety of other conditions, such as psoriasis, transplant rejection, and other immunologic diseases. It may someday be approved for such uses; however, at this time, these would be off-label uses.
