What Are Testosterone Pellets Used For?

Men who have low testosterone levels may benefit from testosterone pellets. Using this medicine can help replace these low levels, which are due to a variety of causes. The medication can also help initiate puberty in adolescent boys. There are also some unapproved uses for testosterone pellets, including the treatment of low testosterone levels in women and certain types of breast cancer in women.

An Overview of Uses for Testosterone Pellets

The testosterone pellet (Testopel®) is a prescription medication approved as a replacement testosterone therapy in males with low testosterone levels due to a variety of causes. It may also be used to stimulate puberty in adolescents for whom it is delayed.

Testosterone pellets are a long-acting hormone treatment. The medicine comes as tiny pellets that are implanted in the fatty layer of tissue just beneath the skin (subcutaneously), where they release testosterone as they slowly dissolve over three to six months.

Using Testosterone Pellets for Low Testosterone

Testosterone is the main male sex hormone. The majority of testosterone in the body is made by the gonads, or testes, in response to hormone signals sent out by the brain (specifically, the hypothalamus and pituitary gland). In general, low testosterone levels (known medically as hypogonadism) can result from problems with the testes themselves (called primary hypogonadism) or problems with the hypothalamus or pituitary gland (called secondary hypogonadism).

There are many different possible causes of low testosterone levels in men. Sometimes, however, the underlying cause is not known. Possible causes include but are not limited to:

  • Chemotherapy or radiation
  • Injury to the testes, hypothalamus, or adrenal gland
  • Congenital abnormalities
  • Surgical removal of one or both testicles.
