What Is Testosterone Gel Used For?

How Does Testosterone Gel Work?

Testosterone gel works as a hormone replacement therapy by increasing testosterone in the body to a normal level.

This medicine is used as a gel because it would have little effect on testosterone levels if taken by mouth. When medications are taken by mouth, they must first pass through the liver before they reach the bloodstream.

The liver metabolizes testosterone extensively before it has a chance to reach the bloodstream, and adequate blood levels of the medication usually cannot be achieved. However, when testosterone is applied to the skin, it bypasses the liver, allowing significant amounts of the hormone to reach the bloodstream.

Testosterone Gel Uses in Children

This medication is not approved for use in children, as it has not been adequately studied in this age group. Using testosterone gel in children could result in bone problems.

Is Testosterone Gel Used for Off-Label Reasons?

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend this product for something other than treating low testosterone levels in men. These are known as off-label uses. Testosterone gel could be used in this fashion to treat the following conditions:

  • Low testosterone levels in women (even though testosterone is thought of as a "male" hormone, women also produce a little of it)
  • Slightly low, yet still considered normal, testosterone levels in men.
