Synvisc-One and Pregnancy

Because Synvisc-One (Hylan G-F 20) is technically considered a device -- not a medication -- it does not have a pregnancy category rating from the Food and Drug Administration. This means that the risks of using it during pregnancy are unknown. If you are pregnant, consult your healthcare provider before starting treatment with Synvisc-One.

Is Synvisc-One Safe During Pregnancy?

Synvisc-One® (Hylan G-F 20) is a treatment for osteoarthritis that is injected directly into the knee joint. It is not known if the product is safe for use during pregnancy.

Understanding the Pregnancy Category System

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) uses a category system to classify the possible risks to a fetus when a specific medicine is taken during pregnancy. However, Synvisc-One is not considered a medication by the FDA. Instead, it is classified as a device. Therefore, it does not have a pregnancy category rating.

Synvisc-One has not been adequately studied in pregnant humans, and there does not appear to be any data available from use in pregnant animals either. As a result, the possible negative effects of using this product during pregnancy are not known.

Final Thoughts

If you are pregnant or thinking about becoming pregnant, let your healthcare provider know before receiving a Synvisc-One injection. He or she will consider the benefits and risks before making a recommendation in your particular situation.
