Who Should Not Get the Shingles Vaccine?

You should not get the shingles vaccine if you:
 
  • Are allergic to the shingles vaccine, Zostavax, or any inactive components used to make vaccine. Your healthcare provider or pharmacist has a list of the inactive components.
     
  • Are severely allergic to neomycin or gelatin. If you have had a skin reaction (such as hives) but no other allergic symptoms, it is okay for you to receive the shingles vaccine.
     
  • Have a weakened immune system, often due to cancer, HIV, AIDS, certain medications, or other immune disorders.
     
  • Are pregnant.
