Although dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is a naturally occurring hormone, it is also sold as a dietary supplement. Proponents claim it is beneficial for treating various age-related conditions and is commonly used to enhance sexual desire and performance. Some of these claims are legitimate; others have yet to be substantiated.
In general, dehydroepiandrosterone supplements are safe; however, high doses may cause side effects such as menstrual irregularity, acne, and hirsutism. In addition, long-term overdoses could cause a hormone imbalance.
