What Is Polyethylene Glycol Electrolyte Solution and Bisacodyl?
Polyethylene glycol electrolyte solution and bisacodyl (HalfLytely
® and Bisacodyl) is a prescription medication licensed to cleanse the bowels before a
colonoscopy. This product comes as a kit that contains HalfLytely powder (which is mixed with water before use) and one bisacodyl delayed-release tablet. This product was named "HalfLytely" because you will need to drink only two liters of the solution instead of the usual three to four liters for other
bowel-prep products.
Just like any medicine, polyethylene glycol electrolyte solution and bisacodyl can cause side effects. However, not everyone who uses the drug will experience problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well.
If reactions do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider. Serious side effects are less common.
Common side effects may include but are not limited to:
- Overall feelings of discomfort
- Abdominal (stomach) fullness
- Abdominal (stomach) cramping
- Nausea
- Vomiting.
