What Is Naproxen/Esomeprazole Magnesium Used For?

Naproxen/Esomeprazole Magnesium Use for Rheumatoid Arthritis

Naproxen/esomeprazole magnesium is also approved for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, which is an autoimmune disease. This means that for some reason, the immune system mistakes a person's own cells as invaders and attacks them, causing damage. As with many other autoimmune diseases, scientists still do not know the cause or causes of rheumatoid arthritis. There are many rheumatoid arthritis symptoms, including chronic pain along with tender, warm, and swollen joints.

Naproxen/Esomeprazole Magnesium Use for Ankylosing Spondylitis

Naproxen/esomeprazole magnesium is also approved for the treatment of ankylosing spondylitis, which is an autoimmune disease that causes painful arthritis of the spine. In people with this disease, the immune system begins functioning abnormally and starts to attack the spine. This results in pain and stiffness, especially in the lower back. Other ankylosing spondylitis symptoms may include changes in vision and potential problems in the heart, lungs, or digestive system.

How Does This Medication Work?

Naproxen/esomeprazole magnesium contains two different active ingredients. The first, naproxen, belongs to a group of medications called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Like other NSAIDs, it works by blocking a specific enzyme known as cyclooxygenase (COX), blocking the production of various inflammatory substances in the body.

The other active ingredient, esomeprazole, belongs to a group of medications called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). The stomach contains tiny pumps (called proton pumps) that produce acid. Esomeprazole works by binding to the proton pumps, stopping them from producing acid. PPIs are very effective at decreasing acid production, as they work directly at the acid pumps.

Naproxen is very effective, but many people cannot take naproxen because it has a tendency to cause stomach ulcers. Esomeprazole is added to this medication to help reduce the risk for ulcers.
