Mycophenolate Sodium Dosage

Your healthcare provider will take several factors into consideration when determining a suitable dosage of mycophenolate sodium for your particular situation. Some of these factors include your age and other medications you are taking. The initial adult dose is usually 720 mg twice a day. For children, the amount will be calculated using the child's height and weight.

An Introduction to Your Dosage of Mycophenolate Sodium

The dose of mycophenolate sodium (Myfortic®) your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on a number of factors, including:
  • Your age
  • Your height and weight (in children)
  • Other medications you may be taking.
As is always the case, do not adjust your dose unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.

Mycophenolate Sodium Dosing Guidelines

The standard dosage for preventing transplant rejection in adults who have received a kidney transplant is mycophenolate sodium 720 mg twice a day (1440 mg daily). The standard amount in children is usually either 540 mg twice a day (1080 mg daily) or 720 mg twice a day (1440 mg daily), depending on the child's body surface area, which is normally calculated using the child's height and weight.
Mycophenolate sodium is given in combination with cyclosporine (Gengraf®, Neoral®, Sandimmune®) and a corticosteroid. Your healthcare provider will recommend a dose for these medications as well.

General Information on Taking Mycophenolate Sodium

Some considerations to keep in mind during treatment with mycophenolate sodium include the following:
  • This medication comes in the form of a delayed-release tablet. It is taken by mouth twice a day.
  • Try to take your mycophenolate sodium doses at the same times each day to keep an even level of drug in your bloodstream.
  • Take this medication on an empty stomach, one hour before or two hours after food.
  • Do not crush, cut, or chew mycophenolate sodium tablets. They must be swallowed whole. This is because the tablets have a special coating so they pass through the stomach and dissolve in the intestines.
  • For this drug to work properly, it must be taken as prescribed.
  • If you are unsure about anything related to dosing with mycophenolate sodium, please talk with your healthcare provider, nurse, or pharmacist.
