Miacalcin Injection and Pregnancy

In studies on Miacalcin injection and pregnancy, the medication increased the risk of low birth weight when it was given to pregnant rabbits in high doses. The full risks of using the drug in humans are not known. Therefore, if you are using Miacalcin injection and pregnancy occurs, your healthcare provider will weigh the benefits and risks in your particular situation.

Miacalcin Injection and Pregnancy: An Overview

Miacalcin® injection (calcitonin salmon injection) may not be safe for use during pregnancy, although the full risks are not currently known. Studies in pregnant animals have suggested that the drug may cause problems when used during pregnancy.

Miacalcin Injection and Pregnancy Category C

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) uses a category system to classify the possible risks to a fetus when a specific medicine is taken during pregnancy. Pregnancy Category C is given to medicines that have not been studied in pregnant humans but that do appear to cause harm to the fetus in animal studies. Also, medicines that have not been studied in any pregnant women or animals are automatically given a pregnancy Category C rating.

When given to pregnant rabbits, very high doses of Miacalcin injection increased the risk of low birth weight. Miacalcin does not cross the placenta, however, so it does not reach the fetus directly.

If you are pregnant or are thinking of becoming pregnant while taking Miacalcin injection, let your healthcare provider know. He or she will consider both the benefits and risks of taking the drug during pregnancy before making a recommendation in your particular situation.
