What Are Methyltestosterone Tablets Used For?

Although the main use of methyltestosterone tablets is to increase testosterone levels in men, it's important to note that this oral testosterone replacement therapy has mainly been replaced by other forms of testosterone. This is because the other forms, such as creams or patches, are less likely to cause liver problems. This drug is also prescribed for late puberty in boys and other uses.

An Overview of Uses for Methyltestosterone Tablets

The methyltestosterone tablet (Methitest®) is a prescription testosterone replacement medication. It is approved for treating certain causes of low testosterone in men and late puberty in boys. It is also approved in certain cases to help treat breast cancer in women.

There is some thought that oral methyltestosterone use (such as with methyltestosterone tablets) is more likely to cause liver problems than treatment with other forms of testosterone, such as testosterone injections, creams, or patches. For this reason, oral methyltestosterone therapy has fallen out of favor and has largely been replaced by other forms of testosterone replacement.

Using Methyltestosterone Tablets for Low Testosterone

Low testosterone can cause a number of symptoms. Common signs of low testosterone include:

  • Low sex drive (libido)
  • Fatigue and low energy
  • Decreased muscle mass and increased fat mass
  • Problems with erectile function
  • Decreased bone strength
  • Depression
  • Delayed puberty.
  •
Of course, a man could have all of these symptoms and still have normal testosterone levels, since most of these symptoms are relatively common. The only real way to diagnose low testosterone is by actually measuring levels in the blood.

Treating low testosterone levels with methyltestosterone tablets (or any other testosterone replacement therapy) based on symptoms alone without testing testosterone levels is highly inappropriate and potentially dangerous.

There are several different causes of low testosterone in men. Normally, testosterone is produced when the testes are stimulated by certain hormone signals from glands in the brain. Low levels can occur due to problems in the brain or the testes.

Methyltestosterone tablets can treat low testosterone whether the problem lies in the testes or the brain, because they do not rely on either the testes or the brain to increase testosterone levels.
