What Are Methyltestosterone Capsules Used For?

If you are an adult man with low testosterone levels, you may benefit from methyltestosterone capsules. This medicine is also approved to treat symptoms of certain types of breast cancer in women and to start puberty in boys who have delayed puberty. Unapproved uses for methyltestosterone capsules include treating low testosterone or other types of cancer (besides breast cancer) in women.

An Overview of Uses for Methyltestosterone Capsules

The methyltestosterone capsule (Testred®) is a prescription testosterone replacement medication. It is approved to treat low testosterone levels in men and to treat delayed puberty in boys. It is also approved in certain cases to help relieve symptoms of breast cancer in women.

There is some thought that oral methyltestosterone use, including methyltestosterone capsules, is more likely to cause liver problems than treatment with other forms of testosterone, such as injections, creams, or patches. For this reason, oral methyltestosterone therapy has fallen out of favor and has largely been replaced by other forms of testosterone replacement.

Methyltestosterone Capsule Use for Breast Cancer

Methyltestosterone capsules are approved for use in women with inoperable breast cancer that is spreading to other areas of the body, such as the bones. Although it is not a cure for breast cancer, this medicine may help relieve symptoms and help reduce side effects of certain other breast cancer medications. This drug is typically used in women who have surgically had their ovaries removed and/or who are taking anti-estrogen medications.

Hormonal treatment of breast cancer is complicated, and each case must be treated individually under the care and expertise of an oncologist. A treatment regimen that is right for one woman may not be a good choice for another woman. Sometimes, androgens like methyltestosterone capsules can accelerate breast cancer, causing it to progress more rapidly, so close monitoring is always necessary.
