Drug Interactions With Memantine XR

Carbonic Anhydrase Inhibitors
Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors make the urine less acidic, which decreases the body's ability to excrete memantine XR through the urine. This could lead to high levels of memantine XR in the blood. Although this drug interaction is probably most likely to occur with carbonic anhydrase inhibitors that are taken by mouth, carbonic anhydrase eye drops could also cause problems.

Dextromethorphan
Dextromethorphan and memantine XR affect certain brain receptors in a similar way. It is not known if it is safe to take these medications together. Make sure to check with your healthcare provider before combining these products. Dextromethorphan is an active ingredient in many different prescription and nonprescription cough medications.

Ketamine (Ketalar)
Ketamine and memantine XR affect certain brain receptors in a similar way. It is not known if it is safe to take these medications together. Make sure to check with your healthcare provider before combining these products.

Sodium Bicarbonate
Sodium bicarbonate makes the urine less acidic, which decreases the body's ability to excrete memantine XR through the urine. This could lead to high levels of memantine XR in the blood. This is not expected to be a problem with normal consumption of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) in food. However, it is likely to be a problem with a large consumption of sodium bicarbonate (such as with sodium bicarbonate tablets).
