Maqui Berry Benefits

Treating osteoarthritis, diabetes, and heart disease are just some of the claimed health benefits of maqui berry products. This type of "super fruit" is rich in antioxidants and is found in many health products. Despite the popularity of maqui berries, there is actually very little scientific evidence to support the effectiveness of these products.

What Are the Claimed Health Benefits of Maqui Berries?

"Super fruits" have recently become immensely popular. Some of these super fruits are familiar, such as blueberries, while others are quite exotic. Maqui berry is one of the more exotic super fruits, although it certainly would not seem exotic to the native people of the Patagonia regions of South America who have been harvesting and eating maqui berries for ages.

Although it seems that super fruits like maqui berry are claimed to be beneficial for just about anything, there are a few particular uses that seem to be more commonly suggested, such as:

  • Treating or preventing the following medical conditions:

  • Promoting weight loss
  • Enhancing general health
  • Promoting youthfulness.

Despite the widespread hype, there is little scientific evidence to suggest that any particular super fruit really provides an exceptional level of these benefits in humans. There is little evidence to suggest that maqui is more beneficial than blueberries, pomegranates, or other fruits with high antioxidant content. There is certainly no reason to believe at this time that maqui berry pills, capsules, or extracts would be exceptionally beneficial or worth the expense.

In fact, because berries and other similar natural products contain many different potentially beneficial compounds, eating the whole fruit (or at least the juice) is probably the best and most reasonable way to obtain the benefits.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not allow manufacturers of maqui products to state that they can diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease, as is the case with almost all foods or supplements; however, a quick search on the Internet reveals many such claims.
