Maqui Berry and Breastfeeding

Although not much is known about the safety of using maqui berry while breastfeeding, the product is generally considered safe for nursing mothers. However, because few human studies have been done, the full risks of using these products are currently unknown. If you are considering using a maqui berry product while breastfeeding, talk to your healthcare provider about the potential risks and benefits.

Can Breastfeeding Women Use Maqui Berry?

There is no scientific information to suggest that maqui berry is safe for use during breastfeeding, but there is also no reason to suspect that it would cause any problems.

Should I Take Maqui Berry While Breastfeeding?

Whether you should take maqui berry while breastfeeding is, of course, a personal decision only you can make. It will depend on your comfort level with supplements or "functional foods" that have not been proven safe in breastfeeding women, your particular beliefs about supplements and functional foods, and the advice of your healthcare provider.

Because of all the media attention and other hype surrounding the possible benefits of maqui berry as a "superfood," it is possible to feel as though you are doing yourself (and your baby) a disservice by not taking the product. It may be helpful to understand that the benefits are probably overstated (see Does Maqui Berry Really Work?). If you are interested in taking maqui berry but are at all concerned about doing so while breastfeeding, remember that you will have plenty of time to try this product after your child has been weaned.

It should be noted that although there is no scientific evidence to show that maqui berry is safe for use while breastfeeding, there is no reason to suspect that it would cause problems either. In particular, moderate consumption of the actual fruit or juice would not particularly be expected to cause problems.

However, the same cannot be said for maqui berry supplements, which may contain very low or very high amounts of various components of the berry, and may contain other substances as well; the actual amounts are unknown, as these products are not closely regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
