Senior Health Home > Synvisc-One and Breastfeeding

According to the manufacturer of Synvisc-One (Hylan G-F 20), it is unclear if the product is safe for women who are breastfeeding. It also hasn't been determined yet if Synvisc-One passes through breast milk. Therefore, if your healthcare provider recommends receiving the injections while you are breastfeeding, monitor your child for any problems or changes.

Can I Use Synvisc-One While Breastfeeding?

At this time, it is unknown if Synvisc-One® (Hylan G-F 20) passes through breast milk. If you are breastfeeding, you should talk with your healthcare provider before receiving this product. The manufacturer states that the safety and effectiveness of Synvisc-One have not been established in breastfeeding women.
Just as it is unknown if Synvisc-One passes through breast milk, it is unknown if it could cause any problems in a nursing infant. If your healthcare provider recommends that you receive these injections while breastfeeding, be sure to watch for any problems or changes in your infant.

Talking With Your Healthcare Provider

You should discuss breastfeeding and Synvisc-One with your healthcare provider. Each woman's situation is different, and you and your healthcare provider understand your situation best. After considering what you want and expect, as well as your current health situation, the two of you can make a shared decision that is right for you.
