Memantine XR (Namenda XR®) is a prescription drug used to treat Alzheimer's disease. This medicine comes in the form of an extended-release capsule and is taken only once daily.
Before starting treatment with memantine XR, make sure your healthcare provider has all of your health information, including any other drugs you are taking and any other medical problems you may have. You may not be able to safely use this medicine if you are taking certain medications (including some nonprescription medicines) or if you have certain health conditions, such as seizures, kidney disease, or a severe urinary tract infection.
Most people tolerate this drug well. If side effects do occur, they are generally mild and easily treated. Some of the common side effects include headaches, diarrhea, and dizziness.
