Senior Health Home > Methyltestosterone Capsules

Available by prescription only, methyltestosterone capsules are a hormone medicine licensed to treat low testosterone levels in men. These capsules can also relieve symptoms of certain types of advanced breast cancer in women. This medication contains an altered form of testosterone, which allows the hormone to be swallowed rather than injected. Side effects may include liver problems, acne, and decreased sperm count.

What Are Methyltestosterone Capsules?

The methyltestosterone capsule (Testred®) is a prescription testosterone replacement medication. It is approved to treat low testosterone levels in men. It is also approved to help alleviate the symptoms of inoperable, late-stage breast cancer in women.

Because it is an anabolic steroid, the methyltestosterone capsule is classified as a controlled substance in the United States. This means that special laws and regulations control its sale and use.

Are There Side Effects?

Just like any medicine, methyltestosterone capsules may cause side effects. However, not everyone who takes the drug will experience problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well.

If reactions do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider. Serious reactions are less common.

Common side effects of methyltestosterone capsules include but are not limited to:

  • Liver problems
  • Menstrual irregularities (in women)
  • Development of male characteristics (in women)
  • Acne
  • Decreased sperm count.
