Some of the most commonly reported side effects of memantine XR include headaches, diarrhea, and dizziness. Other, less common side effects included drowsiness, vomiting, and weight gain. Although most reactions to this medication do not require medical attention, some should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider, such as depression, hallucinations, and difficulty breathing.

An Introduction to Memantine XR Side Effects

Just like any medicine, memantine XR (Namenda XR®) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who uses the medication will have problems. Most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.

Serious Side Effects of Memantine XR

Some memantine XR side effects are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider. Although generally rare, some of these side effects may actually be fairly common. These include but are not limited to:
 
  • Hallucinations
  • Depression
  • Aggression
  • Anxiety
  • Falling
  • Signs of an allergic reaction, such as:
     
    • An unexplained rash
    • Hives
    • Itching
    • Swelling of the mouth or throat
    • Wheezing
    • Difficulty breathing.
