Dehydroepiandrosterone Interactions Explained

The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when dehydroepiandrosterone is combined with any of the drugs listed above.

Hormone Therapy for Breast Cancer
Dehydroepiandrosterone may make hormone therapy for breast cancer less effective. Do not take dehydroepiandrosterone with any of these medications. If you have breast cancer (even if you do not take hormone therapy for breast cancer) you should not take dehydroepiandrosterone, since it could potentially make the cancer worse.

Various Other Medications
Dehydroepiandrosterone seems to slow down the liver enzymes that metabolize many drugs. This means that dehydroepiandrosterone could potentially increase the level of such medications in the blood. This is not necessarily a good thing; in fact, it could be quite dangerous. Specifically, dehydroepiandrosterone inhibits the liver enzyme known as CYP 3A4. Many drugs are metabolized by this enzyme (too many to list). Therefore, if you take any medications, it is a good idea to ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist about any potential interactions with dehydroepiandrosterone.

Final Thoughts

It is possible that not every drug interaction with dehydroepiandrosterone was discussed in this article. Therefore, you should talk with your pharmacist or healthcare provider about any drug interactions that may apply to you.
