Following this procedure, most people experience a relief from their pain, locking or popping. You may not find this to be true immediately after surgery, but after a month or two of physical therapy, your symptoms should be better.
If your doctor discovers another problem in your knee that may be causing your symptoms, such as a meniscal tear or arthritis, this may also affect your expected results and change your course of care after the surgery.
For example, many people with knee pain have a certain amount of arthritis. Your doctor will be better able to see how much arthritis you have during the arthroscopy. Although the arthroscopy will not cure the arthritis, loose flaps of cartilage and other damaged tissue can be removed which can help reduce the pain associated with arthritis.
If additional loose bodies do form in the future, it's possible that the pain or other symptoms may also return. If your symptoms are significant, these should - again - be removed.
Because individual situations can vary, if you have any questions about your expected results, you and your doctor can discuss your particular situation. It is important that your expectations match your doctor's expectations.
