You should not take ibandronate if you:
 
  • Are allergic to ibandronate sodium, Boniva, or any inactive components used to make the medication. Your healthcare provider or pharmacist has a list of the inactive ingredients.
     
  • Have low blood calcium (hypocalcemia).

 

  • Have an abnormality of the esophagus that causes problems swallowing. Such problems might include an esophageal stricture or achalasia. 

 

  • Cannot sit or stand upright for an hour (which is necessary in order to take the drug).
