What Is Hylan G-F 20 Used For?

How Does Hylan G-F 20 Work?

Healthy joints contain a fluid (known as synovial fluid) that works like a cushion and lubricant for the joint. In people with osteoarthritis, the synovial fluid may break down, becoming thinner and less able to protect the joint.

Hylan G-F 20 contains a mixture of hylan A and hylan B, two substances made from sodium hyaluronate, a natural product obtained from chicken combs. Hyaluronate is also found in the human body, especially within the joints and the synovial fluid. Injecting hylan G-F 20 into the joint helps to provide the cushioning and lubrication lacking in the arthritic joint.

Is Hylan G-F 20 Used in Children?

Hylan G-F 20 is not approved for use in children, as it has not been adequately studied in this age group.

Off-Label Uses for Hylan G-F 20

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend hylan G-F 20 for something other than osteoarthritis of the knee (this is known as an "off-label" use). At this time, using the product in joints other than the knee (such as the ankles, hips, or shoulders) is not approved in the United States and is, therefore, considered an off-label hylan G-F 20 use.
