What Should I Tell My Healthcare Provider Before Taking Hylan G-F 20?
You should talk with your healthcare provider prior to taking
hylan G-F 20 (
Synvisc®) if you have:
- A swollen leg, ankle, or foot
- An infection in or around the knee
- Any allergies, including allergies to food, dyes, or preservatives.
Also, let your healthcare provider know if you are:
- Pregnant or thinking about becoming pregnant
- Breastfeeding.
Make sure to tell your healthcare provider about any other medications you are taking, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
Specific Hylan G-F 20 Warnings and Precautions
Warnings and precautions to be aware of prior to taking hylan G-F 20 include the following:
- If you are allergic to any bird products, such as feathers or eggs, you might also be allergic to hylan G-F 20, since it is made from chicken combs.
- Your healthcare provider should not inject any medications (such as steroids or anesthetics) into the knee joint along with hylan G-F 20, as this would dilute the product and make it less effective. It is okay for your healthcare provider to inject a local anesthetic to help numb the area prior to the injection.
- In the United States, hylan G-F 20 is not approved for injection into any other joint except the knees.
- This product should not be injected into the bloodstream or anywhere else except the knee joint.
- Hylan G-F 20 should be used with caution if you have swelling of the leg, ankle, or foot.
- It is unknown if hylan G-F 20 passes through breast milk. Therefore, if you are breastfeeding or plan to start, discuss this with your healthcare provider prior to beginning treatment (see Synvisc and Breastfeeding).
- It is not known if hylan G-F 20 is safe for use during pregnancy (see Synvisc and Pregnancy).
