Hylan G-F 20 is approved for people with osteoarthritis of the knee who have not experienced adequate pain relief from medications. It is a gel-like liquid that is injected directly into the knee joint to provide cushioning and lubrication for the joint. Injections are given once a week for three weeks. This product can relieve pain for up to six months.

What Is Hylan G-F 20?

Hylan G-F 20 (Synvisc^®) is an osteoarthritis treatment that is injected directly into the knee to cushion and lubricate the joint. Such treatments are known as viscosupplements. It is given as three separate injections (each one week apart) and helps relieve pain for up to six months.

This product is most appropriate for individuals who have not received adequate pain relief from other arthritis treatments (such as medications) but who are not yet good candidates for knee replacement surgery.

Potential Side Effects

Hylan G-F 20 can cause side effects. However, not everyone who receives the treatment will experience problems. Most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or can easily be treated by you or your healthcare provider. Serious side effects are less common.

Possible hylan G-F 20 side effects include but are not limited to:

Knee pain
Knee swelling
Fluid build-up around the knee.
