How Does Galantamine Work?

Galantamine is classified as an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor. It works by preventing a specific enzyme (known as acetylcholinesterase) from breaking down acetylcholine in the brain. Acetylcholine is a chemical that aids in many brain functions, including memory, attention, reason, and language. There is some thought that problems with inadequate acetylcholine in the brain may be responsible for some of the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease.
 

Galantamine Uses in Children

Galantamine is not approved for use in children. This makes sense, since Alzheimer's disease is a condition of the elderly.
 

Off-Label Galantamine Uses

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend galantamine for something other than Alzheimer's disease. Off-label galantamine uses include the treatment of the following conditions:
