Galantamine Dosage: An Introduction
The dose of
galantamine hydrobromide (
Razadyne®) that your healthcare provider recommends will vary depending on a number of factors, including:
- How you respond to galantamine
- The type of galantamine you take (short-acting or long-acting galantamine)
- Other medications you may take
- Other medical conditions you may have.
As is always the case, do not adjust your galantamine dose unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.
Long-Acting Galantamine Dosing
The starting dose for long-acting galantamine for
Alzheimer's treatment is 8 mg once daily. After four weeks, your healthcare provider may increase the dose to 16 mg once daily. If necessary, your healthcare provider may further increase your dose, up to a maximum of 24 mg once daily after an additional four weeks. Long-acting galantamine capsules should be taken with food, preferably in the morning.
People with liver or kidney disease may need a lower galantamine dosage.
Short-Acting Galantamine Dosing
Regular galantamine tablets and oral solution (liquid) are taken twice daily with food. The starting recommended dose is 4 mg twice daily. After four weeks, your healthcare provider may increase your dose to 8 mg twice daily. If necessary, he or she may further increase your dose to 12 mg twice daily after an additional four weeks. Some people may benefit from an even higher dose (16 mg twice daily), and your healthcare provider may recommend this high dose if you tolerate galantamine well.
People with liver or kidney disease may need a lower galantamine dosage.
