What Is Fluocinonide Gel Used For?

Is It Safe for Children to Use Fluocinonide Gel?

Fluocinonide gel is not specifically approved for use in children, as it has not been adequately studied for children. Children may be more likely to absorb more of the drug past the skin into the rest of the body, increasing the risk for side effects. Talk with your child's healthcare provider about the benefits and risks of using fluocinonide gel.

Fluocinonide gel is a highly potent steroid. In most situations, a less potent steroid should be tried first for children.

If your healthcare provider recommends using fluocinonide gel on the diaper area of a child, do not use plastic pants or tight-fitting diapers, as this may increase the risk for side effects.

Are There Off-Label Uses for Fluocinonide Gel?

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend this medicine for something other than the treatment of skin inflammation and itching. This is known as an "off-label" use. For instance, fluocinonide gel is sometimes prescribed off-label to treat canker sores.
