Side Effects of Diclofenac Eye Drops

Although most people have no problems with diclofenac eye drops, side effects are possible. Commonly reported ones include tearing, inflammation of the cornea, and temporary burning. In most cases, side effects are mild and are easy to treat. However, notify your healthcare provider right away if you develop serious reactions, such as signs of corneal problems or signs of an allergic reaction.

An Introduction to Diclofenac Eye Drops Side Effects

Just like any medicine, diclofenac eye drops (Voltaren Ophthalmic®) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who uses the medication will experience problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are easily treated by you or your healthcare provider.

Side Effects of Diclofenac Eye Drops to Report

Some side effects with diclofenac eye drops, while occurring infrequently, are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider. These include but are not limited to:

  • Signs of corneal problems, such as:

    • Severe eye pain
    • Excessively watery eyes
    • Severe eye redness
    • Severe sensitivity to light

  • Easy bruising or bleeding
  • Signs of an allergic reaction, including:

    • An unexplained rash
    • Hives
    • Itching
    • Unexplained swelling of the mouth or throat
    • Wheezing or difficulty breathing or swallowing.

Because it may be difficult to distinguish between serious side effects and normal effects of the surgery, do not hesitate to ask your healthcare provider about any potentially serious problem you may be experiencing.
