What Is Desoximetasone Ointment Used For?

Can Children Use It?

Desoximetasone ointment is not specifically approved for use in children. Children have an increased risk for serious side effects of steroids. In general, steroids, including desoximetasone ointment, are used for short-term treatment only. This is especially important for children.
Importantly, desoximetasone ointment is not approved to treat diaper rash, due to the increased risk for side effects. Do not apply this medicine to the diaper area, unless your child's healthcare provider specifically recommends that you do so.

Are There Off-Label Reasons to Use Desoximetasone Ointment?

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend this medicine for something other than the treatment of itching and inflammation of the skin. This is called an "off-label" use. Sometimes, steroids are used off-label for treating the following conditions:
  • Penile adhesions or phimosis (typically in young boys)
  • Labial adhesions (typically in young girls)
  • Vitiligo.
