Cutivate Ointment Side Effects

Although most people have no problems when using Cutivate Ointment, side effects are possible, and may include burning, redness, and skin irritation. As a steroid, Cutivate Ointment can cause specific problems if used for too long and over too large an area of the body (however, even these side effects are rare). Such problems include unexplained weight gain, bulging eyes, and fatty deposits on the neck.

An Introduction to Cutivate Ointment Side Effects

As with any medicine, side effects are possible with Cutivate Ointment® (fluticasone propionate ointment). However, not everyone who uses the medication will experience problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.
(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with Cutivate Ointment. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list with you.)

Common Side Effects of Cutivate Ointment

Cutivate Ointment has been studied thoroughly in clinical trials. In these studies, one group of people used the medicated ointment, while another group was given a placebo (an ointment with no active ingredients). As a result, it was possible to see what side effects occurred, how often they appeared, and how they compared to the placebo.
In clinical trials, there were no "common" side effects (that is, none of the side effects occurred in more than 1 percent of people). The most commonly reported reactions, which were, in fact, not common at all, included:
  • Itching
  • Burning
  • Increased sweating
  • Redness
  • Hives
  • Irritation
  • Lightheadedness.
In general, side effects are more common when a dressing (such as a bandage) is used to cover the medication. Do not use a dressing or bandage when using Cutivate Ointment.
