Alendronate Interactions Explained
The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when
alendronate is combined with any of the drugs listed above.
Aspirin
Both aspirin and alendronate can be irritating to the stomach. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking aspirin if you are taking alendronate. Of course, no other medications (including aspirin) should be taken within 30 minutes of taking alendronate.
Calcium Products
Calcium binds to alendronate in the stomach, preventing it from being absorbed in the body and making it less effective. While it is usually important for people with
osteoporosis to take calcium, it should not be taken within 30 minutes of taking alendronate.
Iron Supplements
Iron binds to alendronate in the stomach, preventing it from being absorbed in the body and making it less effective. Do not take iron supplements within 30 minutes of taking alendronate.
Magnesium Products
Magnesium binds to alendronate in the stomach, preventing it from being absorbed in the body and making it less effective. Do not take magnesium supplements within 30 minutes of taking alendronate.
Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs
Both
NSAIDs and alendronate can be irritating to the stomach. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking an NSAID if you are taking alendronate. Of course, no other medications (including NSAIDs) should be taken within 30 minutes of taking alendronate.
Teriparatide
In studies, combining
teriparatide with medications like alendronate seemed to make teriparatide less effective. Talk to your healthcare provider before using these medications together.
