Precautions and Warnings With Alendronate Effervescent Tablet

Your healthcare provider will ask if you have any problems with your stomach or esophagus before prescribing alendronate effervescent tablets. Precautions when using this drug include warnings for potential bleeding, inflammation, and ulcers in some people who use this medicine. Your healthcare provider will also examine your medical history and ask about all other vitamins, supplements, and medications you are taking.

What Should I Tell My Healthcare Provider?

You should talk with your healthcare provider prior to taking alendronate effervescent tablets (Binosto™) if you have:
 
  • Kidney disease, such as kidney failure (renal failure)
  • A problem with your esophagus, such as narrowing of the esophagus
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Low blood calcium (hypocalcemia)
  • Stomach problems, such as stomach inflammation or ulcers
  • Heart disease, such as heart failure
  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Had invasive dental work, such as dental implants or extractions, or if you have plans for dental work
  • Dental disease, such as gingivitis (gum disease)
  • Cancer
  • Been treated with chemotherapy or steroid medications
  • Anemia
  • A blood clotting disorder
  • Dentures that do not fit well
  • Been told you have problems absorbing minerals in your stomach or intestines (malabsorption syndrome)
  • Been told to follow a low-salt diet
  • Any allergies, including to foods, dyes, or preservatives.
 
Also, let your healthcare provider know if you are:
 
  • Unable to stand or sit upright for at least 30 minutes
  • Pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant
  • Breastfeeding.
 
You should also tell your healthcare provider about all other medications you are taking, including prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
