Drug Interactions With Alendronate Effervescent Tablet

More Detail on Drug Interactions With Alendronate Effervescent Tablets

The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when alendronate effervescent tablets are combined with any of the drugs listed above.

Aminoglycoside Antibiotics
Combining alendronate effervescent tablets with aminoglycoside antibiotics could lead to low calcium levels in the body, known medically as hypocalcemia. Severe hypocalcemia can be life-threatening. Your healthcare provider may choose to monitor your blood calcium levels if you take these medicines together.

Antacids
Taking alendronate effervescent tablets with an antacid may decrease the amount of medication absorbed into your body, potentially making the tablets less effective. Do not take an antacid for at least 30 minutes after taking alendronate effervescent tablets.

Aspirin
Both aspirin and alendronate effervescent tablets can irritate the stomach, and taking them together can further increase the risk for stomach irritation and stomach ulcers. If you are taking alendronate effervescent tablets, talk to your healthcare provider before taking aspirin.

Calcium-Containing Products
Calcium binds to alendronate effervescent tablets in the stomach, preventing them from being absorbed well into the body and making them less effective. Your healthcare provider may recommend you take a calcium supplement to further improve your bone health; however, you must wait at least 30 minutes after taking alendronate effervescent tablets before taking calcium or any other medication you have to swallow.

Deferasirox
Both alendronate effervescent tablets and deferasirox can be irritating to the stomach. Taking them together can increase the risk for stomach irritation, stomach ulcers, and stomach bleeding. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking these drugs together.

Iron
Iron binds to alendronate effervescent tablets in the stomach, preventing them from being absorbed well into the body and making them less effective. You must wait at least 30 minutes after taking alendronate effervescent tablets before taking any iron-containing products.

Magnesium
Magnesium binds to alendronate effervescent tablets in the stomach, preventing them from being absorbed well into the body and potentially making them less effective. Do not take any magnesium-containing products within 30 minutes of taking alendronate effervescent tablets.

Multivitamins
Most multivitamin preparations contain vitamins and minerals that can bind to alendronate effervescent tablets in the stomach and prevent them from being absorbed well into the body. This could decrease the effectiveness of alendronate effervescent tablets. Do not take multivitamins or any medication you need to swallow for at least 30 minutes after taking alendronate effervescent tablets.

Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs
Both NSAIDs and alendronate effervescent tablets can be irritating to the stomach, and taking them together can increase your risk for stomach irritation. The combination could also increase the risk for kidney problems. While alendronate effervescent tablets can be taken with NSAIDs, the medicines should be used together with caution. Therefore, you should talk to your healthcare provider before combining these drugs.

Phosphate-Containing Products
Phosphate can bind to alendronate effervescent tablets in the stomach, preventing them from being absorbed well into the body and potentially making them less effective. To avoid the risk of this interaction, do not take any phosphate-containing products within 30 minutes of taking alendronate effervescent tablets.

Proton Pump Inhibitors
Proton pump inhibitors can make alendronate effervescent tablets less effective. Talk to your healthcare provider about this possible interaction before taking these drugs together.

Sunitinib
Combining alendronate effervescent tablets with sunitinib may increase the risk for a serious bone condition known as osteonecrosis of the jaw, in which the jaw bone begins to weaken and die. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking these medications together. He or she may want to monitor you more closely for this condition.
