Drug Interactions With Alendronate and Cholecalciferol (Cont.)

Alendronate and Cholecalciferol Interactions Explained

The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when alendronate and cholecalciferol is combined with any of the drugs listed above.

Aspirin
Both aspirin and alendronate and cholecalciferol can be irritating to the stomach. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking aspirin if you are taking alendronate and cholecalciferol. Of course, no other medications (including aspirin) should be taken within 30 minutes of taking alendronate and cholecalciferol.

Bile Acid Sequestrants
Bile acid sequestrants can decrease the absorption of vitamin D (one of the components of alendronate and cholecalciferol) from the digestive tract, perhaps making alendronate and cholecalciferol less effective. Your healthcare provider may recommend that you take additional vitamin D to prevent this interaction from occurring.

Calcium Products
Calcium binds to alendronate and cholecalciferol in the stomach, preventing it from being absorbed in the body and making it less effective. While it is usually important for people with osteoporosis to take calcium, it should not be taken within 30 minutes of taking alendronate and cholecalciferol.

Cimetidine
Cimetidine can cause your body to break down vitamin D (one of the components of alendronate and cholecalciferol) more quickly than usual. Depending on your individual situation, your healthcare provider may recommend that you take additional vitamin D.

Iron Supplements
Iron binds to alendronate and cholecalciferol in the stomach, preventing it from being absorbed in the body and making it less effective. Do not take iron supplements within 30 minutes of taking alendronate and cholecalciferol.
