Welcome to the Senior Health Channel

You may have no choice about getting older, but you certainly have a choice in how you respond to it. Just because a person is getting older, this does not mean that they have to accept many of the conditions that seem to accompany aging. Healthy aging is as much a lifestyle choice as anything else. That being said, you can't ignore the fact that you're aging, either. It's important to be aware of conditions that occur more frequently as someone ages, and take the steps necessary to minimize (and possibly prevent) these chronic conditions.
Conditions like osteoporosis, macular degeneration, heart disease, and diabetes can affect almost anyone at nearly any age; however, they tend to occur more frequently in seniors than in other age groups. While you may not be able to prevent all of these conditions, being aware of the risk factors and taking the steps necessary to minimize them (such as quitting smoking and eating heart-healthy foods), can help ensure that you age in a healthy way -- even gracefully!
And your mental health is important, too. Depression often affects seniors, who may be dealing with a slower-paced lifestyle than they were previously used to or who are having trouble adjusting to the changes that can take place in both the body and the mind as we age. Alzheimer's is another condition that many seniors (and their families) worry about. By knowing the signs and symptoms of this disease, early treatment can often be obtained.
